My Background
Hello. My name is Melanie Hicks and I provide individualized tutoring sessions for reading. In 2020 I made the jump to online tutoring when COVID-19 changed education across the world. Before Spring Break I was working with individual students on campus in one-on-one sessions to build reading skills. After Spring Break, I was working with students on-line continuing to build reading skills. Now, I am offering on-line tutoring to students from second grade through high school. My passion is to help students master reading and writing so they can SHINE in their classrooms, in their careers, and in their lives!
My Expertise
My career in education has been multi-faceted. Some of my roles have been: classroom teacher, resource teacher, special education teacher, sign language interpreter, paraprofessional, office manager, admissions counselor, tutor, case manager, IEP writer, advocate...and the list goes on...
ONLINE TUTORING: The skills gained from my varied positions and from course work with the Orton-Gillingham Online Academy have prepared me to work with students in this new educational environment.
Personalized Lessons
The Orton-Gillingham approach has many features. What makes it personalized is that every lesson includes diagnostic analysis and prescriptive measures for the next lesson. The approach provides explicit instruction of the rules of the English language. Tutoring Sessions
Tutoring sessions are online and can be scheduled for 50 minutes or 30 minutes.
Twice a Week
$90
2 sessions per week/ 45 minutes each. Gain basic skills by working through the Orton-Gillingham scope and sequence, with extra attention paid to reading comprehension and fluency.
Two 30-minute sessions per week
$60
For some students, a shorter session may be more appropriate. Schedule two sessions a week that are 30 minutes in length for $60.
Three Times a Week
$125
Three 45-minute sessions per week. For middle school students who need help managing assignments. Gain basic skills by working on concepts from the Orton-Gillingham scope and sequence... and get help with organization, time management, self-advocacy, and assignment completion.
Three 30-minute sessions per week
$90
For younger students, a shorter session may be more appropriate. Schedule three sessions a week that are 30 minutes in length for $90. The extra session each week gives tie for more repetition and in depth practice.
